Six researchers from the University of Washington have developed the first mobile phone that can run without a battery. Indeed, the apparatus is manufactured from the commercial components. It is only in the prototype stage and to operate, it needs only 3.5 microwatts of electricity, and energy that it draws in the ambient radio waves via an antenna, and in the light via A very small solar cell. This device without battery is used to make and receive calls, the sound quality is not so good and just like with a walkie talkie, you have to press a button to speak.
The phone uses a passive microphone
In principle, making a call requires much more energy for converting analog sound signals, voices, into digital signals. In the design of this new mobile phone, this process is replaced by a passive microphone. The vibrations cause electrical variations in radio waves broadcast by a base station which is in the vicinity. The telephone picks up these waves and then transforms them with the microphone and then sends them back to the base station by reflection. This station will interpret the variations and reconverts them into audio signals afterward so that at the end send the result to the networks of the operators.
